Senior Vice President, Government Relations
Paul Hurst joined Health Management Associates in February 2012 as Senior Vice President of Governmental Relations with responsibility for management of the Government Relations Department at the state and federal levels throughout the company.
Prior to joining Health Management, Mr. Hurst was Chief of Staff for Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. In this role, Mr. Hurst oversaw all aspects of Governor Barbour’s administration. Prior to serving as Chief of Staff, Mr. Hurst served as Gov. Barbour’s Chief Counsel, where he represented the Governor in all legal matters including civil litigation and state agency administrative law. His responsibilities included management of Mississippi’s economic development issues, Medicaid realignment, the legislative passage of comprehensive tort reform, state budget matters, as well as rebuilding challenges in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Before working for Governor Barbour, Mr. Hurst was in private practice in Jackson, Mississippi. He began his legal career as a clerk for Chief Judge L.T. Senter, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi.
Mr. Hurst also services a robust pro bono practice and serves on numerous boards. Most recently, he served on the Board of Trustees for the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Mississippi. He was named Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year by the Jackson Young Lawyers in 2000.
Mr. Hurst earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University and his law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law.
