Health Management Invests in Communities
Taxes and Donations Benefit Residents, Local Non-Profits
The collective policies and actions of each Health Management hospital and staff advance Health Management's reputation as a good corporate citizen by:
- Utilizing company resources and the creative talents of Associates to benefit the needs of the community
- Conducting business in a manner that contributes to the economic strength of the community
- Supporting public policies that enhance business operations and promote community interests
- Operating hospitals with a sensitivity to the natural environment of our communities
Health Management hospitals have a different legal structure than not-for-profit hospitals, which means that we pay property taxes.
In 2011, the company and its local hospitals paid nearly $151 million in property, sales and use, state income, payroll and other taxes. These taxes fund local police and fire departments, maintain roadways, and fund schools, among other things.
In Washington State, Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center contributed more than $3.4 million to the local economy in 2010 through property and business taxes, which support local schools and other community needs.
Yakima Regional is also committed to supporting local organizations through free health screenings and charitable giving. In 2010, the hospital gave $1.1 million in donations to multiple local non-profits ranging from the United Way to Yakima Schools Foundation to organizations for health care and youth.
When Health Management purchased the Yakima facility in 2003, a pledge was made to contribute an additional $10 million—payable over 10 years—to the Yakima Valley Community Foundation, initially funded by the Sisters of Charity of Providence. Today, the Foundation is a leading contributor to local community needs, and Yakima Regional is incredibly proud to support the Foundation’s great work.
