John C. Merriwether
Vice President of Financial Relations
John C. Merriwether is the Vice President of Financial Relations. He joined the Company in January 1994, as an Assistant Controller at the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville, NC. In January 1996, he was promoted to Corporate Assistant Controller for the Company in Naples, FL where his duties included Internal Audit, financial statement preparation, and SEC work. In August 1997, Mr. Merriwether was promoted to Director of Investor and Media Relations, where he worked closely with William J. Schoen, Chairman and CEO, and Stephen M. Ray, Executive Vice President and CFO, to enhance the investor relations area and broaden exposure for the Company. In March 1998, Mr. Merriwether was promoted to the role of Director – Operations/Finance with financial and operational responsibility for the six-hospital “Carolina Division.” After a successful 1998 fiscal year, October 1999 saw a change in control for Mr. Merriwether, as he assumed financial and operations responsibility for the seven-hospital “Western Division.” Mr. Merriwether was named Director of Financial Relations in January 2000, and promoted to his current position in June 2003. Prior to joining HMA, from 1987 to 1992, Mr. Merriwether was employed by the Mercantile Bankshares Corporation, a commercial bank in Baltimore, MD, (NSDQ: MRBK). He held several positions during his tenure with Mercantile including Credit Analyst, Money Market Representative, and Commercial Loan Officer, and left in July 1992 to pursue an MBA. Mr. Merriwether received his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA in 1987 after having attended the Woodberry Forest School in Orange, VA from 1979 to 1983. He graduated with an MBA from the Columbia Business School, in New York City, NY in January 1994, with a concentration in accounting and health care management.
